The results of my iGENEA DNA test offered up some fascinating insights into the cultural and historical roots of my surname – Foote. From my findings, I joined the journey tracing back the footprints of my lineage from the jumbled narratives of history to the stark clarity of genetic data.
My test results revealed that the surname Foote traces back to English origin. It’s an occupational surname derived from the foot soldiers (infantry) of medieval times. These foot soldiers were the backbone of the feudal armies, providing the force needed in close quarter's battle. My ancestors, therefore, maybe the brave foot soldiers who fought in countless battles centuries ago to protect their lords.
Furthermore, the roots of the Foote name stem back to the region of Devon, England, where first instances of use were recorded in the late 13th century. Notably, the Footes were early English settlers in the American Colonies, entrenching their legacy in a new world.
