DNA Origins Analysis: Do you have Celtic Roots?

Researching Celtic origins

A DNA test by iGENEA provides you with evidence of whether you have Celtic roots. Based on your specific genetic characteristics, we can identify your origins and state from which line the Celtic descent is (paternal, maternal or both lines). In addition, your profile is compared with more than 2,000,000 people in our database. If we find a genetic match, i.e., people with whom you correspond to a certain degree, then you have the opportunity to contact these people and intensify your family research.

The genetic profile of the Celts discovered

The Celts were an Indo-European people of ancient times who originally came from the Alpine area and adjacent regions. The Celts spread from there to many parts of Europe, especially throughout Western Europe. Genetic studies now make it possible for us to distinguish the Celts from their neighbouring peoples not only linguistically and culturally, but also on the basis of their DNA.

2,000 saliva samples from 25 regions now regarded as typically Celtic were analysed. The subjects came from areas in Brittany, Scotland and Ireland, where Gaelic or other Celtic languages are still spoken to this day. This made it possible to identify genetic profiles that occur very frequently in these regions and therefore, are indicative of Celtic origin. Moreover, the migration of these genetic lines corresponds with the migration of the Celts.

Researching Celtic origins

Carriers of the same or similar genetic characteristics are summarised by haplogroup. Haplogroups represent the various branches of Homo sapiens and show the roots and movement of our ancestors. Thus, belonging to certain haplogroups is also an indication of Celtic descent.

Questions about the DNA test for Celtic ancestry

How far back does a DNA genealogy test go?

The basic test goes back to approx. 2,000 years. Premium and Expert tests date back to approx. 100,000 years.

What is the difference between the three DNA tests?

With the iGENEA Basic Test you can find out your percentage of origin, find relatives and receive a written result with a certificate about your result. Additional relatives can be found in the desired line. The Expert Test contains the Basic Test and additionally contains the haplogroup, the primitive people and the region of origin for the pure paternal and pure maternal line. How can I, as a woman, examine my paternal lineage with a DNA test?

With our DNA-Explorer you can find out your entire origin of the maternal and paternal side. Women and men can do this test. Only for a test of the pure male line we need the samples of a man, this can be e.g. the father, a brother, uncle or cousin. If you do not have a male relative, we recommend our iGENEA Basic Test (DNA-Explorer). If you have such a relative who is willing to give samples, we recommend our iGENEA Premium Test.
